The proposal was read during plenary by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.

According to the president, the proposed amendment is designed to strengthen how the Police Trust Fund is managed and to enhance its ability to support training, welfare, and equipment procurement for the Nigeria Police Force.

He explained that the fund is meant to provide additional financial support outside the normal budget, helping to improve operational capacity through modern equipment, skills development, and welfare programmes for personnel.

Tinubu noted that the reform has become necessary due to growing security challenges across the country, stressing the need for a more transparent and efficient framework for police funding.

He urged lawmakers to give the bill quick consideration, expressing confidence in the National Assembly’s support for security-related reforms.

The Police Trust Fund has faced ongoing public debate in recent years over issues of accountability, effectiveness, and sustainability.
