#Tinubu Urges Governors to Champion Grassroots Development, Dispels Local Government Autonomy Misconceptions

President Bola Tinubu has called on the 36 state governors to prioritize grassroots development, emphasizing that financial autonomy for local governments is not intended to undermine their authority over the third tier of government.

Speaking during a New Year homage by members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), led by Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Tinubu highlighted the critical role of governors in driving food security, economic prosperity, and national growth.

“The leadership you provide at the subnational level is central to achieving our collective goals. We must ensure that hope is restored through effective governance at the grassroots,” the President said.

Tinubu dismissed rumors of conflicts with governors over local government autonomy, urging collaboration to enhance development at all levels.

“There have been gossips about disagreements on local government autonomy. That is not the case. The goal is collaboration, not confrontation. You control the local governments, and together, we can make Nigeria better,” he clarified in a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

Focus on Agriculture and Economic Stability

President Tinubu also underscored the importance of agricultural growth as a cornerstone of economic stability, urging governors to maximize their control over land resources to drive productivity.

“You are the most vital link to Nigeria’s prosperity. The Federal Government only accounts for 30 to 35 percent of allocated revenue; the rest goes to you. The agricultural value chain starts with your leadership. Let us grow more, work harder, and stabilize our currency. Nigeria’s prosperity depends on our collective and consistent efforts,” he said.

Governors Pledge Support

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, NGF chairman, reaffirmed the governors’ commitment to supporting the President’s vision. He noted progress in economic restructuring and project delivery despite inflationary pressures.

“I must admit that I’ve achieved more in two years of this administration than in my entire first term. This is due to improved funding from economic restructuring. Yes, inflation is a challenge, but we are making significant strides,” Abdulrazaq said.

The meeting reinforced a shared commitment between the federal and state governments to tackle pressing issues, including local government autonomy, agricultural advancement, and economic resilience.
