TRUMP ASSURES TINUBU OF STRONGER U.S. BACKING AGAINST TERRORISM

United States President Donald Trump has responded to a letter from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring Nigeria of Washington’s continued support in the fight against terrorism and other security challenges affecting the country.

The response letter, dated July 6, 2026, was made public by President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. In the correspondence, Trump thanked Tinubu for his message and praised his leadership efforts in addressing Nigeria’s security concerns.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump stated in the letter.

The development comes amid improving relations between Nigeria and the United States, following increased cooperation in areas of security, intelligence sharing and counterterrorism operations.

Trump also acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to address violence affecting communities across the country and expressed his commitment to supporting the Nigerian government’s fight against terrorist groups.

He stated that the United States and Nigeria share a common objective of confronting terrorism and strengthening regional security, adding that the two countries’ defence cooperation framework provides a foundation for deeper collaboration.

According to the letter, the United States has deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Nigerian military by providing training, expertise and intelligence assistance aimed at improving the country’s ability to tackle security threats.

The renewed partnership follows previous engagements between both countries, including the establishment of a Joint Working Group involving security officials from Nigeria and the United States to coordinate efforts against terrorism.

The collaboration has reportedly resulted in intelligence exchanges, military training programmes and coordinated operations targeting extremist groups.

A major highlight of the security cooperation was a joint operation in the Lake Chad region that targeted ISIS-linked militants and reportedly led to the death of senior figures within the group.

The relationship between Abuja and Washington has strengthened in recent months, with senior U.S. officials engaging Nigerian authorities on security and other areas of bilateral cooperation.

Trump reaffirmed that the United States remains committed to working with Nigeria to promote stability, security and economic progress.
