US EXPANDS WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY ROLLOUT TO NIGERIA, WEST AFRICAN STATES

The United States Trade and Development Agency has approved a new initiative to support the deployment of U.S.-made wireless infrastructure across Nigeria and three other West African countries, in a move aimed at improving digital connectivity and expanding telecom access in underserved areas.

The project involves a feasibility study for the installation of about 1,500 mobile communications base stations across Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin. The plan is intended to strengthen internet and mobile network coverage, particularly in rural and off-grid communities where access remains limited.

According to officials, the initiative will leverage technology from U.S.-based firms, including Massachusetts-based Vanu Inc., to assess the viability of large-scale deployment and develop financing and regulatory frameworks for implementation across the region.

The study will also evaluate existing telecom infrastructure, market conditions, and legal environments in the participating countries, with the goal of supporting the rollout of more reliable and affordable mobile services.

U.S. officials say the project is designed to close the urban-rural digital divide in West Africa while also creating export opportunities for American technology companies.

The initiative is expected to enhance connectivity for millions of people and support economic activity in areas that currently suffer from poor or outdated network coverage.
