Vandalism Triggers Major Fire at Buguma Wellhead – NNPC

NNPC Blames Vandalism for Buguma Wellhead Fire

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has attributed a recent fire incident at its Buguma Wellhead 008 to the activities of oil thieves.

In a statement, Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye explained that the fire, which occurred at a wellhead operated by NNPC Eighteen Operating Ltd. (NEOL) in Buguma, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, was a result of an attempted oil theft. Vandals, attempting to compromise the Christmas Tree and steal crude oil, inadvertently ignited the fire.

Soneye emphasized that this incident reflects a disturbing trend of repeated attacks on oil installations in the region. Since March 2023, the company has witnessed persistent crude oil theft activities, with criminals resorting to increasingly desperate measures, including the use of explosives, to access hydrocarbons.

“The NNPC Ltd. remains committed to combating these acts of sabotage and mitigating the significant financial losses they inflict on the nation’s economy,” Soneye stated. “We are actively collaborating with security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and halt these criminal activities. Furthermore, NNPC Ltd. reaffirms its commitment to supporting the communities affected by these destructive acts and will continue to provide necessary relief efforts.”
