WIKE LEADS RIVERS LAWMAKERS, 23 COUNCIL CHAIRMEN TO FRESH MEETING WITH FUBARA

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and chairmen of the state’s 23 local government councils to another meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara as efforts to sustain reconciliation between both political camps continue. The meeting took place on Sunday at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt, less than two weeks after an earlier engagement involving political leaders loyal to both men.

The delegation included the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and Kingsley Chinda, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State. They met with Fubara and members of his political camp as part of renewed efforts to improve relations following the prolonged dispute that divided the state’s political leadership.

The latest meeting follows Wike’s recent announcement that the political feud had ended, after Fubara reportedly agreed to return to the political family that supported his emergence as governor. A reconciliation committee led by Magnus Abe, chairman of the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee, was subsequently established to engage the governor and his supporters.

Fubara has since declared support for the Rainbow Coalition and endorsed Chinda as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election. The governor had initially been screened alongside Chinda for the APC governorship primary but later withdrew from the race, citing the need for peace and unity. Chinda subsequently emerged as the party’s sole candidate for the election.

The dispute between Wike and Fubara began shortly after the governor assumed office in 2023 and escalated into a prolonged political crisis involving the state assembly. Tensions intensified in October 2023 when fire damaged part of the assembly complex, while lawmakers loyal to Wike later initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara. The crisis culminated in President Bola Tinubu declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025, leading to the suspension of the governor, his deputy and members of the assembly for six months. The elected officials later returned to office, and the latest meeting represents another attempt to maintain reconciliation ahead of the 2027 elections.
