WORLD CUP VAR REVIEW: MISAPPLIED PROTOCOLS LEAVE BALOGUN WRONGLY RED-CARDED

A controversial VAR decision during the FIFA Men’s World Cup has sparked debate after United States forward Folarin Balogun was sent off in his side’s match against Bosnia-Herzegovina following a video review.

The incident occurred in the 63rd minute when referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue before the Video Assistant Referee recommended an on-field review for a possible red card for serious foul play.

The review focused on a challenge between Balogun and Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic, with replays showing the defender’s ankle bending awkwardly during the contest for the ball.

After watching the footage at the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned the original decision and issued Balogun a straight red card.

The decision has since generated criticism, with refereeing analysis suggesting the challenge was accidental rather than reckless. It was argued that both players were genuinely competing for possession and that the contact, although resulting in an awkward injury, did not amount to serious foul play.

The review also raised concerns over the use of slow-motion footage during the VAR process. According to the analysis, slow-motion replays should only be used to identify the point of contact in potential red-card incidents, not to determine the intensity or intent of the challenge.

The incident has renewed discussions about the consistency of VAR decisions and the application of review protocols during major international tournaments.
