Authorities in Zambia have arrested two men accused of attempting to use witchcraft to harm President Hakainde Hichilema.
The suspects, identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, and Leonard Phiri, 43, were apprehended in Lusaka, the nation’s capital. According to a police statement released on Friday, the men were allegedly on a mission to harm the President using charms and mystical practices.
The statement revealed that the suspects were found in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon, which authorities believe were part of their alleged witchcraft tools.

Investigations uncovered that the two suspects were reportedly hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of Emmanuel Banda, a member of Zambia’s Parliament. Emmanuel Banda has been embroiled in legal controversies, including robbery charges in neighboring Zimbabwe, for which he was arrested last month.
The MP, who has denied the charges, has not been seen publicly since his alleged escape from custody in August while awaiting a court hearing.
Promised Payment for the Alleged Plot
Police disclosed that the suspects were promised a payment of K2,000,000 (approximately $72,166) upon completing their mission.
Legal Proceedings to Follow
The police have confirmed that the suspects will be arraigned in court soon to face charges related to their alleged criminal activities.
This incident highlights the continued challenges surrounding belief in witchcraft in parts of Africa, where traditional practices sometimes intersect with modern politics and governance.
