The Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining activities in Zamfara State, effectively ending over five years of restrictions initially imposed due to escalating security concerns.
Security-Driven Decision
At a weekend press briefing, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, announced the decision, citing substantial improvements in the state’s security situation. He emphasized the economic potential of Zamfara, a region rich in gold, lithium, and copper reserves.
“The existential threats that necessitated the ban have been largely mitigated, thanks to intelligence-driven security operations that neutralized key bandit commanders,” Alake stated.
One such breakthrough included the recent capture of notorious bandit leader Halilu Sububu, underscoring the region’s enhanced safety.
Addressing Economic Losses
The 2019 ban, while intended to address security challenges, inadvertently fueled illegal mining operations that exploited the country’s resources without regulation. With the ban now lifted, the government aims to:
- Regulate mining activities to ensure transparency.
- Curb illegal operations.
- Maximize economic benefits from Zamfara’s mineral wealth.
Dr. Alake noted that Zamfara’s mineral resources hold the potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s national revenue.
Clarifications on Mining MOU with France
The minister also addressed concerns regarding a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with France, clarifying that it focuses solely on training and capacity-building for Nigeria’s mining professionals.
“This does not involve ceding control of our mineral resources or forming a military pact,” he explained, adding that similar agreements have been signed with Germany and Australia.
Future of the Mining Sector
Dr. Alake commended the media for supporting reforms in the mining sector and urged continued collaboration to counter misinformation. He further revealed plans for additional reforms in 2025 aimed at attracting investments and ensuring sustainable growth in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.
Economic Revival for Zamfara
With the lifting of the ban, Zamfara’s mining sector is expected to reclaim its pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy, fostering development and creating new opportunities in the region.
