2027: LAGOS NDC GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE PROMISES FREE EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE IF ELECTED

The Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Funso Doherty, has unveiled a series of proposed measures he says his administration would implement within its first 100 days if elected governor in 2027.

Doherty said his administration would make education and healthcare accessible to Lagos residents at no cost, while also introducing additional support programmes for children in public schools.

He made the commitments on Thursday at a special town hall meeting organised by The Platform, a thought leadership initiative of The Covenant Nation in Lagos.

According to the NDC candidate, public education would be made entirely free under his proposed administration. He said the policy would cover not only tuition but also books and examination fees.

He also promised to introduce a daily school feeding programme, under which every child attending a public school would receive one nutritious meal.

Doherty further proposed free transportation for public-school pupils who require assistance getting to and from school.

He said the measures were intended to ensure that financial difficulties would not prevent children from accessing education.

“Education is not denied to any child,” Doherty said, while emphasising the importance of investing in children given the state’s population structure and future needs.

FREE HEALTHCARE AND MATERNAL SERVICES

On healthcare, the NDC candidate pledged to establish what he described as genuinely free healthcare services across Lagos if elected.

He specifically mentioned maternal and child healthcare as areas that would receive attention under his proposed administration.

Doherty presented healthcare and education as key areas of his proposed first-100-days programme, alongside measures targeted at improving the welfare of children and families.

150,000 HOUSING UNITS PROPOSED

Doherty also outlined his proposed housing programme when asked how his administration would address the housing needs of Lagos residents.

Rather than pursuing relatively small housing developments, he said his government would adopt what he described as a “quantum approach” by developing housing on a much larger scale.

According to him, the target would be to deliver approximately 150,000 housing units during his first four-year term.

He explained that the proposal was based on his assessment that housing supply in Lagos has not kept pace with demand.

“Our commitment is to deliver about 150,000 units in our first term because a large part of the problem with housing is the fact that supply has not kept up with the demand,” he said.

The promises form part of Doherty’s campaign proposals ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, covering education, healthcare, school feeding, transportation and housing.
