2027: PARTIES RUSH TO BEAT INEC’S DEADLINE

Political parties in Nigeria have intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections as they work to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadlines, including the submission of updated membership registers by May 10, 2026.

Across party secretariats nationwide, activities have increased with internal reorganisations, primaries, and conventions taking place alongside ongoing realignments and defections among politicians.

A major development has been the emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which reportedly gained momentum after receiving several lawmakers, including three senators and 18 members of the House of Representatives.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded the sale of nomination forms, screened aspirants, and is currently processing candidates ahead of the next stage, with screening results expected to be released in mid-May.

Similarly, the NDC and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are both holding national conventions, with the NDC meeting scheduled in Abuja and the SDP gathering in Bauchi.

The Labour Party (LP) has also released a detailed timetable, with nomination form sales ending in mid-May, followed by screening, appeals, and primaries for various offices, including governorship, National Assembly, and presidential slots.

Other political parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) have also announced their schedules, with primaries and conventions planned throughout May 2026 as they finalise candidates for the elections.

The BOOT Party introduced a new “Trust Before Ticket” system, requiring financial commitments from aspirants alongside nomination fees. The party said the approach is designed to promote accountability, transparency, and integrity in candidate selection.

Meanwhile, internal divisions continue within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with parallel leadership groups reportedly operating different schedules for primaries and congresses across various states.

Overall, the political atmosphere remains highly active as parties race to comply with INEC timelines and position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
