The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced Damilola Sonayon-James as the deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 governorship election, where she will run alongside Obafemi Hamzat.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the party’s state chairperson, Cornelius Ojelabi, who explained that her selection followed extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the state.
According to the party, the 41-year-old nominee was chosen based on her leadership experience, strong grassroots connections, loyalty to the party, and her ability to contribute meaningfully to governance in Lagos State.
The APC described Sonayon-James, a development professional and party leader, as a “Badagry Princess” who currently serves as the state Deputy Woman Leader of the party. She is expected to contest alongside Hamzat, who recently emerged as the party’s governorship candidate.

Party officials said the joint ticket reflects a blend of experience, innovation, and grassroots engagement, adding that it aligns with the party’s goal of sustaining development in the state.
The statement also urged residents of Lagos to continue supporting the APC, stressing that the party remains focused on continuity, economic progress, and inclusive governance.
Sonayon-James has over 15 years of experience in public policy, governance, sustainability, and community development. She previously served as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, where she led initiatives focused on agriculture, youth empowerment, women’s development, and social welfare.

She has also been active in political mobilisation and advocacy, particularly among women and young people across Lagos State, earning recognition for her grassroots engagement efforts.
Her emergence is seen as part of the APC’s broader strategy to strengthen inclusiveness and widen its appeal ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Lagos State remains a key political stronghold of the APC, having been under the party’s control since 1999, and is widely regarded as a major base of influence for President Bola Tinubu.
The 2027 election will determine who succeeds Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose tenure is expected to end after completing his second term in office.
