2027: SIX SENATORIAL ASPIRANTS STEP DOWN AS EX-KANO GOVERNOR SHEKARAU EMERGES APC CONSENSUS CANDIDATE

Six senatorial aspirants in Kano State have withdrawn from the race in support of former Kano State governor and ex-senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development reportedly followed a high-level political meeting held in Abuja and chaired by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The meeting lasted for several hours before a final agreement was reached among the stakeholders.

The aspirants who stepped down include Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver.

Speaking after the meeting, the politicians explained that their decision was made in the interest of peace, unity, and political stability in Kano State. They described the endorsement of Shekarau as a strategic move aimed at strengthening cooperation within the political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing supporters after the gathering, Shekarau said the decision was reached after careful consultations and evaluation of available political options. He also sought the opinion of those present, who reportedly gave unanimous approval in support of the arrangement.

Shekarau, a former teacher and civil servant, became a major political figure after serving as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

His administration was known for its focus on education reforms, infrastructure development, social welfare initiatives, and policies rooted in Islamic values.

After leaving office as governor, he represented Kano Central in the Senate and later served as Minister of Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Over the years, Shekarau has remained influential in Kano politics despite changing political alliances and realignments. He is widely regarded as a politician with a strong support base that cuts across different political camps, making him a recurring figure in discussions surrounding the political future of Kano State.
