20TH ANNIVERSARY: SULTAN IS A BEACON OF UNITY AND STABILITY, SAYS GOV LAWAL

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has described the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, as a humble and unifying traditional leader whose leadership has promoted stability within the Sultanate and the wider Muslim community.

The governor made the remarks on Monday during the 13th Shaikh Usmanu Bin Fodiyo Week and the 20th anniversary of the Sultan’s coronation, held at the International Conference Centre in Sokoto.

The event, which attracted prominent personalities from Nigeria and beyond, was organised around the theme: “Reviving Ethical Leadership and Social Harmony: Lessons from Sokoto Jihad Leaders.”

In his goodwill message, Lawal congratulated the Sultan on completing 20 years on the throne, describing the milestone as an important moment for the traditional institution and the people of Sokoto.

Speaking on behalf of the government and people of Zamfara State, the governor said the Sultan’s wisdom, guidance and consistent leadership had remained a source of inspiration, particularly during periods of insecurity and other social challenges.

He also expressed appreciation for the Sultan’s recent presence and support during the coronation and presentation of staff of office to 19 traditional rulers in Gusau.

According to Lawal, the Sultan’s participation demonstrated his commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and promoting unity across the region.

The governor further noted that the legacy of the Sokoto Caliphate extended beyond geographical boundaries, with its principles of knowledge, justice, moral discipline, responsible leadership and respect for human dignity remaining relevant to contemporary society.

He urged the people of Zamfara and other parts of the country to draw lessons from the teachings of Sheikh Usmanu Dan Fodiyo, particularly in addressing insecurity, poverty, moral decline and the vulnerability of young people.

Lawal stressed the need to promote peace, justice, education and social responsibility as essential foundations for building stronger communities.

SULTAN CALLS FOR GREATER COMMITMENT TO PEACE

Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto expressed appreciation to individuals, organisations and communities that had supported him throughout his 20-year reign.

He acknowledged their contributions and encouraged religious leaders, traditional rulers and community stakeholders to intensify their efforts towards promoting peace, unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Sultan also emphasised the importance of cooperation among different groups in strengthening social harmony and national cohesion.

The anniversary celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on the Sultan’s two decades of leadership and the enduring influence of the Sokoto Caliphate’s historical and moral teachings.

Governor Lawal’s remarks further highlighted the importance of traditional institutions in promoting stability, strengthening relationships among communities and supporting efforts towards national development.
