The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor after a competitive selection process involving eight candidates.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, following the council’s approval of the recommendation submitted by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.
According to Akande, the process began in line with the provisions of the University Act ahead of the expiration of the current Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on November 1, 2026. Applications for the position were invited through advertisements published in April, attracting six candidates. A Search Team later identified two additional qualified applicants, bringing the total number to eight.
The Governing Council assessed all eight candidates before shortlisting the top five based on merit. The shortlisted candidates were subsequently interviewed by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which recommended Professor Olapegba as the most suitable candidate for the role.
Describing the exercise as transparent, thorough, and highly competitive, Akande said the Governing Council unanimously approved the recommendation and expressed confidence in Olapegba’s ability to lead the university.
Professor Olapegba currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Ibadan. He joined the institution as an Assistant Lecturer in 2000 and attained the rank of Professor in 2014.
Over the years, he has held several leadership positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Director of Alumni Relations. He has also published numerous academic works, secured research grants, supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students, and contributed to higher education through service on university governing councils and professional associations.
He will officially assume office as Vice-Chancellor after the expiration of the incumbent’s tenure on November 1, 2026.
