At least 73 people were killed and 25 others wounded during an attack on a gold mining site in South Sudan over the weekend. The incident occurred at the Khor Kaltan mining area, about 70 kilometres southwest of the capital, Juba, leaving the local community in shock.

Emergency teams struggled to reach the remote site, while hospitals in nearby towns received the wounded, prioritising those in critical condition.

Vice President James Wani Igga confirmed the casualties and called for urgent medical care and evacuation for the injured. He also urged authorities to launch a formal investigation to determine the identity and motives of the attackers.

While some security sources suggested the assault may have been carried out by forces aligned with opposition leader Riek Machar, his representatives denied involvement and pointed to the South Sudanese army as potentially responsible.
