The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price increase until an ongoing investigation into its tariff adjustment is concluded.
The directive was announced on Thursday in a statement signed by FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.
Regulatory Action
The FCCPC’s intervention follows MultiChoice’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission over concerns about its recurring price hikes.
Initially, the commission summoned MultiChoice’s CEO to appear for an investigative hearing on February 27, 2025, but later rescheduled it to March 6, 2025, after the company requested more time.
“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter.”
The FCCPC stated that the price freeze aims to protect consumers from potential exploitation while investigations are underway.
MultiChoice’s Price Hike Proposal
Earlier this week, MultiChoice notified subscribers of an impending price adjustment, citing the need to maintain the delivery of quality content.
Under the proposed changes, the DStv Compact package was set for an increase, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at ₦30,000 and ₦44,500, respectively.
“Dear Customer, please note that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages. This is to enable us to continue offering world-class homegrown and international content, delivered through the best technology.”
Next Steps
The FCCPC has assured the public that it will provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, MultiChoice must adhere to the price freeze directive or risk regulatory penalties.
