The integrity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is on the line as political stakeholders and party loyalists await the resignation of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Following the leadership crisis that led to Obasa’s removal by 37 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, the APC leadership, Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and a reconciliation committee co-chaired by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba brokered a peace deal to restore stability.
As part of the tripartite resolution, Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency 1, was reinstated but is expected to resign by Wednesday, March 5, 2025, to allow for the emergence of a new Speaker from Lagos West Senatorial District.
A GAC member, quoted in The Guardian on Wednesday, reaffirmed the agreement, stating:
“The deal is clear—Meranda has resigned, Obasa was reinstated, and now he must step down for a new Speaker from Lagos West. Any deviation from this arrangement is unacceptable.”
With the APC, Lagos Assembly members, and the public closely monitoring developments, analysts warn that failure to fully implement the agreement could trigger fresh political turmoil, potentially affecting the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party loyalists stress that the GAC and reconciliation mediators must uphold their credibility by ensuring Obasa follows through with the agreed resignation.
“The final step is Obasa’s resignation. Chief Bisi Akande, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and the GAC must enforce the deal. Any backtracking will send the wrong signal to party members,” a source told our reporter.
