A devastating explosion caused by a brake failure in a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck has resulted in multiple fatalities and the destruction of several vehicles in Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:15 PM at Kugbo Hill, near Karu Bridge, along the Abuja-Keffi Road. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck lost control while descending the hill, crashing into other vehicles before erupting into flames.
According to an eyewitness, Fatima Diamond, the explosion happened suddenly, engulfing multiple vehicles in fire. “I personally counted five burnt vehicles, but I was told over 20 were affected. I had to escape with the help of a motorcyclist,” she recounted.
A survivor described the horror of the moment, saying, “I saw the truck speeding uncontrollably before crashing. Within seconds, there was a massive explosion, and fire spread everywhere.” Many victims were reportedly burned beyond recognition, with others trapped inside their vehicles.
The incident caused severe gridlock, extending as far as AYA Junction in Asokoro, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Some were forced to walk long distances to reach their destinations.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) swiftly responded to the disaster, working to rescue victims and control the situation.
In response, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNG) Initiative expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, urging the public to await a full investigation into the cause of the accident. “While initial reports suggest brake system failure, it is crucial to avoid speculation until all facts are established,” the statement read.
