STRAIT OF HORMUZ TO BE JOINTLY MANAGED WITH OMAN PER INTERNATIONAL LAW, IRAN ANNOUNCES

Iran has announced plans to deepen cooperation with Oman in managing the strategic Hormuz Strait, a vital maritime passage that links the Persian Gulf to global shipping routes.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said both countries share geographical responsibility over the waterway and therefore have what he described as a “natural right” to participate in decisions concerning its administration.

He rejected claims from the United States that the Hormuz Strait should be treated as international waters with unrestricted transit rights for all vessels.

Araghchi stated that while Gulf neighbours would be consulted, final decisions on the management of the strait would rest jointly with Iran and Oman.

He also clarified that Iran does not intend to impose a transit toll on shipping but may introduce service-related charges covering navigation support, pilotage, and maritime safety operations such as search and rescue within the narrow channel.

According to him, these measures are aimed at improving safety and operational efficiency in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

The minister further noted that communication with Iran’s leadership remains active and that policy directives are being implemented as they are received.

The Hormuz Strait remains one of the world’s most important chokepoints for global oil and gas shipments, making its governance a key issue in international diplomacy and energy security discussions.
