#Tinubu Approves ₦2bn for Reconstruction of Mokwa Flood-Ravaged Homes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of ₦2 billion for the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State.

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the intervention during a visit to the affected communities, where he conveyed the President’s condolences and reassured residents of the government’s full support.

“President Tinubu’s heart is with the people of Mokwa,” Shettima said. “He has directed not only the reconstruction of homes but also the immediate repair of damaged bridges and the rehabilitation of the town’s drainage systems.”

The flood, which occurred on May 28, 2025, has been described as one of the deadliest in the state’s history. Over 200 bodies have been recovered, and more are still being searched for, according to Ahmad Suleiman, Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs.

“We’ve confirmed more than 200 fatalities, but search and recovery operations are ongoing. Many are still unaccounted for,” Suleiman said during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.

He added that the state government had launched an emergency response, including the distribution of relief materials and food supplies to displaced victims now taking refuge in makeshift shelters.

Despite these efforts, many victims have voiced frustrations over inadequate relief. Residents in temporary camps reported poor living conditions and insufficient food distribution.

“We are 17 people in my household, but we were given only one loaf of bread and some tea,” said Mama Isah, one of the displaced residents. “How can that be enough, even for breakfast?”

Suleiman noted that trailers loaded with rice and other supplies had been dispatched, and the governor’s wife had donated ₦50 million during a visit to the area. However, growing complaints suggest that the scale of the disaster continues to outpace the relief efforts.

The Federal Government has pledged to work closely with Niger State authorities to ensure the swift implementation of the ₦2 billion reconstruction initiative and improve conditions for the affected families.
