Nigeria Prepares to Lay Former President Buhari to Rest in Daura on Tuesday with Full State Honours

Daura, Katsina State – July 14, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in close coordination with the Katsina State Government and the family of late President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally announced the final arrangements for the burial of the two-time Nigerian leader. The funeral prayer and interment will now hold on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in Daura, the President’s hometown, following the arrival of his remains accompanied from London by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Aisha Buhari & Children by 12:00 noon at Katsina Airport with the new Presidential Jet.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State made this announcement on Monday while briefing newsmen, stating that the new schedule followed extended consultations with the deceased’s family and his close associates in London, where President Buhari passed away on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness.

We pray Almighty Allah to grant his soul eternal rest and reward him with Aljannatul Firdaus,” Governor Radda declared. “On behalf of the government and the good people of Katsina State, we express our profound condolences to his family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the entire nation. Nigeria has lost a father figure and a patriot.”

National Mourning and Mobilization

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to be in Daura to personally attend the funeral of his predecessor and long-time political ally. Following the official announcement of Buhari’s death by the State House on Sunday, President Tinubu ordered national flags to be flown at half-staff for three days in respect of the late statesman.

All relevant federal ministries, departments, and security agencies have activated protocols for a state burial, in keeping with Buhari’s status as both a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and civilian President (2015–2023) — a distinction shared only with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

President Tinubu Declares 7 days mourning for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Security Architecture on High Alert

The Presidential Guards Brigade, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, alongside paramilitary bodies, have been deployed across Katsina and Daura to ensure a secure and solemn ceremony. Military jets and convoys have been placed on standby for visiting dignitaries.

The North-West zonal security command, in conjunction with the Katsina State Command, has assumed operational leadership for the region’s security operations surrounding the event.

Buhari’s Final Homecoming

The funeral prayer will be held at the Emir’s Palace Mosque in Daura, where President Buhari worshipped for decades. The former leader will be interred at his family cemetery, near his private residence, beside his mother’s tomb, in accordance with Islamic rites and Northern cultural traditions.

His burial will mark the culmination of a historic journey that began in 1983 when Buhari first emerged on the national stage as a military leader, later returning to democratic rule and leading the All Progressives Congress (APC) to power in 2015.

A National Icon Departs

As the first democratically elected President to complete two consecutive terms under the APC banner, Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics. Known for his anti-corruption stance, disciplined leadership, and modest lifestyle, Buhari leaves behind a legacy of integrity, ideological resolve, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

Despite criticism during his administration, he retained a loyal support base of over 12 million Northern voters — a demographic that repeatedly rallied behind him across five presidential contests.

Global Tributes and Local Reflection

Leaders from across Africa and beyond have sent messages of condolence. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda referred to Buhari as “a soldier-statesman who gave his life to his nation,” while the ECOWAS Commission praised his “unrelenting pursuit of regional stability.”

Dr. G. Adebajo-Fraser, MFR, a Nigerian stateswoman and political affairs consultant, remarked:

President Buhari was not perfect, but he was principled. He believed deeply in the dignity of leadership and service, and his enduring simplicity will be remembered for generations.”

Religious and Cultural Significance

In Islam, seeking the forgiveness of the people is a noble act before one is lowered into the earth. Buhari’s request, communicated through Mrs. Aisha Buhari, asking Nigerians to forgive his leadership shortcomings, reflects his humility and understanding of spiritual responsibility. As per Islamic belief, Jannatul Firdaus (the highest level of paradise) is reserved for those who serve humanity with sincerity.

“May Allah expand his grave, forgive his sins, and grant him a place among the righteous,” prayed Governor Radda.

Conclusion: Honouring a Legacy

As Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to a leader, a soldier, and a statesman, the weight of history rests on the shoulders of today’s leaders to honour his legacy by building the very institutions he strived for.

The final rites in Daura are not just ceremonial. They are a national moment of reflection — on where Nigeria has been, and where it must now go.
