President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) to step up efforts in delivering tangible development to grassroots communities. He noted that many Nigerians remain dissatisfied with the pace of governance and the limited impact of democratic dividends at the local level.
Addressing party leaders at the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu stressed the importance of grassroots engagement in sustaining the party’s relevance and ensuring national progress.
“We need to do more. Nigerians are still complaining at the grassroots,” Tinubu said. “Governors must intensify efforts and deliver more dividends of democracy. The impact of government must be more visible where the people live and work.”
New APC Secretariat in the Works
During the meeting, Tinubu announced plans to establish a modern, purpose-built national secretariat for the party in the Federal Capital Territory. He proposed the formation of a committee made up of APC governors to collaborate with the FCT Minister in identifying suitable land for the new facility.
“Let us leave a legacy of development. I believe the motion to establish a new secretariat is carried,” the President said.
The current APC headquarters, Muhammadu Buhari House, located at 40 Blantyre Street, Wuse II, Abuja, was acquired for N2.5 billion. While it has served as the party’s base, Tinubu said it no longer meets the party’s evolving needs.
Economic and Security Updates
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms, asserting that Nigeria’s financial situation is gradually stabilizing.
“It’s not easy navigating rough economic waters, but we are making steady progress. Nigeria’s direction is upward,” Tinubu assured.
On national security, Tinubu reported notable advances in the fight against terrorism and banditry, stating that thousands of insurgents have been neutralised. However, he cautioned against complacency and called for sustained investment in security infrastructure and personnel.
“We must stay vigilant. Expanding our security capacity is the only way to ensure lasting peace,” he noted.
Push for Food Sovereignty
President Tinubu also emphasized the administration’s focus on achieving food sovereignty. He urged APC governors to align with federal efforts to boost local food production and reduce dependence on imports.
“We are pushing hard to secure food self-sufficiency. Everyone must play their part to meet our national goals,” he stated.
Party Unity and Expansion
In a show of political inclusiveness, Tinubu welcomed Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), both formerly of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirming that the APC remains open to new members.
“Our doors remain open to all who share our vision,” he said.
High-Profile Attendance
The NEC meeting was attended by top APC figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, current and former governors, ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and other senior party stakeholders.
Thursday’s meeting was held at the State House instead of the usual Buhari House, underscoring the strategic importance of the session.
