The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of police officers captured in a viral video allegedly behaving unprofessionally during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
The directive followed widespread reactions to the video, which reportedly showed officers making derogatory ethnic remarks toward a member of the public.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, the police confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and taken into custody pending disciplinary proceedings.
According to the statement, the affected officers include one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors.
The IGP directed the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the extent of each officer’s involvement and ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are taken where necessary.
The police stressed that the behaviour displayed in the video does not represent the values and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement further noted that ethnic profiling, discriminatory remarks and disrespect towards citizens are unacceptable, adding that officers who violate the Force’s code of conduct will be held accountable for their actions.
The Nigeria Police Force also reaffirmed its commitment to ethical policing, professionalism and building public confidence through fair and respectful treatment of all citizens.
