The Delta State Police Command has arrested four of its personnel after a viral video showed them counting bundles of cash allegedly extorted from motorists along a busy road in the state.
The footage, which sparked outrage on social media, showed one officer casually sitting in a patrol van, sorting through wads of naira notes in broad daylight. Many Nigerians criticized the act, calling it a blatant display of corruption that further erodes public trust in law enforcement.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the officers had been identified and taken into custody. He added that the personnel were paraded before the Commissioner of Police for disciplinary action.
“The policemen in the embarrassing video have been identified and arrested. They appeared before the CP today. Of the four personnel, two of them, who are senior officers, have been queried, while the two inspectors have been detained and are awaiting an orderly room trial,” Edafe stated.
The police assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to address the misconduct and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring integrity and professionalism within the force.
