The Delta State Police Command has raised alarm over a new tactic used by criminals who pretend to be lost and ask unsuspecting members of the public for directions before hypnotising and robbing them.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who issued the warning, said the suspects often lure victims by pretending to need assistance, then use touch or physical contact to disorient and dispossess them.
“We all should be careful because these people are out there trying to do all these things. You don’t have to follow them anywhere, don’t allow them to touch you. If somebody asks you for direction, I am not saying you should not be a nice and concerned Nigerian. Give them direction and let them go, but don’t let them come too close and don’t let them touch you. And on no account should you enter their car for any reason,” Edafe cautioned.
He advised residents to maintain a safe distance when offering help to strangers and to avoid entering vehicles under such circumstances.
The police urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to security agencies.
