Malami Escapes Political Thugs’ Attack at Kebbi Wedding, Condemns Rising Intolerance

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, narrowly escaped an assault by armed political thugs while attending a wedding in Argungu, Kebbi State, on Friday, October 3, 2025.

In a statement released Saturday by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami detailed the incident, which unfolded shortly after the wedding fatiha for Hashim Ahmed Zakari and Aisha Abdullahi Tsamiya at Sabon Garin Kanta, Argungu. He described how attackers emerged from multiple directions, armed with dangerous weapons and shouting provocative chants designed to spark chaos.

“Without provocation, a group of thugs appeared from different directions, brandishing dangerous weapons and uttering inciting statements aimed at instigating chaos and violence,” Malami recounted.

To avert escalation, Malami had opted for a low-profile approach, traveling with a small entourage and directing his supporters to refrain from retaliation. “These precautions, by divine mercy, prevented what could have been a tragic and disastrous outcome,” he noted.

The ex-minister decried the assault as a symptom of deepening political intolerance and thuggery in Nigeria, urging swift action to curb such threats. He stressed that politics must remain a space for dialogue, not violence or intimidation.

Malami vowed to seek justice through legal channels, placing full trust in Nigeria’s security forces and judiciary to probe the matter and hold perpetrators accountable. “I have absolute confidence in our security agencies and the judiciary to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he affirmed.

He appealed to his followers to stay calm and adhere to the rule of law, reaffirming his dedication to peace, justice, and democratic values.

As of Saturday, Kebbi State security officials had yet to release an official response to the attack.
