The centre of Nigeria’s opposition politics appears to be shifting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following growing support from influential political figures for the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has recently been involved in political exchanges with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, is reportedly backing the NDC movement and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. An aide to the former president suggested that Obasanjo played a key role in shaping the coalition around the NDC and would openly support the party as campaigns begin.
The development comes shortly after Obasanjo criticised Atiku, describing him as a politician whose actions and loyalty had disappointed him during their time together in government. Atiku’s camp, however, argued that the comments were politically motivated.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has also thrown his support behind the Obi-Kwankwaso pairing after initially expressing uncertainty about backing Obi for the 2027 election.
Lawal, who supported Obi during the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, said he believed the combination of Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso could provide a stronger alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking recently, Lawal rated the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket above other opposition figures, stating that while both politicians may have weaknesses individually, their partnership could improve their chances.
His renewed involvement in politics has also been linked to his previous opposition to the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023, which he strongly criticised. However, critics have questioned whether his support for Obi would translate into electoral success, especially after the candidate’s defeat in the 2023 election.
Meanwhile, the ADC, which was initially seen as the main opposition platform ahead of 2027, has faced internal challenges, including leadership disputes and legal battles.
The party gained attention in 2025 after several opposition figures joined its structure, with former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola emerging as key leaders. At the time, supporters projected the ADC as a strong coalition capable of challenging the APC.
However, internal disagreements, court cases and the exit of major figures have weakened the party’s momentum.
With Obasanjo’s reported backing of the NDC and Lawal’s open support for Obi, the opposition landscape appears to be undergoing another realignment.
The emerging coalition brings together prominent figures such as Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima and other political leaders, but questions remain over whether their alliance can overcome internal differences and convince Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The coming months will determine whether the NDC can build a genuine nationwide movement or whether it will face the same challenges that affected previous opposition coalitions.
