Lagos State is positioning itself as a frontrunner in Africa’s blue economy, blending innovation, sustainability, and economic growth to unlock the potential of its vast waterways. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed this ambition during the African Blue Economy Summit: Lagos 2025, unveiling a strategic roadmap to lead in marine sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive prosperity.
Speaking at the summit, which coincided with the high-octane E1 Lagos GP electric boat racing championship, Sanwo-Olu highlighted ongoing investments in water transport, maritime infrastructure, and community-led climate projects. “Leveraging the electrifying global stage of the E1 Lagos GP championship, Lagos is not just hosting a race—it is igniting a revolutionary ecosystem where climate action, technology, entertainment, and entrepreneurship collide to create unstoppable economic momentum and future-ready leadership,” he declared. The event, he added, serves as a catalyst for empowering youth, fostering innovation, and building a resilient future aligned with global environmental goals.
The summit drew global attention, featuring discussions on harnessing Africa’s marine resources for equitable growth. Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the administration’s dedication to infrastructure that unlocks waterway opportunities and advances sustainable maritime sectors. “This is a unique platform to harness strategic investments and create a united future,” Osiyemi noted.
International figures echoed the enthusiasm. E1 Series Co-Founder and Chairman Alejandro Agag praised Lagos’ efficiency in hosting the championship, calling it “the beginning of great things” for Nigeria and urging sustained support over the next five years. Football legend and Didier Drogba Foundation President Didier Drogba described the initiative as essential for survival, hailing Lagos as a symbol of transformative progress: “Bringing the E1 race to Africa has always been our dream, and Nigeria has proven that it is possible.” National Council on Climate Change Director-General Omotenioye Majekodunmi focused on practical steps, advocating for mangrove restoration, climate mitigation, and targeted maritime investments.
Attended by continental leaders and stakeholders, the summit underscored Lagos’ emergence as a hub for climate action and economic renaissance. Through events like the E1 Lagos GP, the state is not only entertaining global audiences but also forging partnerships that promise long-term environmental stewardship and prosperity.
