Court Postpones Nnamdi Kanu’s Case to October 16 as NMA Delays Health Report

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to October 16, 2025, due to delays in a medical assessment by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

On September 26, 2025, Justice James Omotosho ordered the NMA president to form a panel of eight to ten members, including a representative from the National Hospital, to evaluate Kanu’s health following claims of deteriorating conditions in Department of State Services (DSS) custody. Kanu cited medical reports indicating liver and pancreatic issues, a lump under his armpit, and critically low potassium levels.

The prosecution, opposing Kanu’s request for transfer to the National Hospital, argued that the DSS provides adequate care. During Wednesday’s proceedings, prosecution lawyer Suraj Sa’ada informed the court that the NMA panel has not completed its assessment and requested an additional week.

Onyechi Ikpeazu, Kanu’s defense lawyer, did not oppose the adjournment. The court mandated the panel to conclude its work within the extended timeframe.
