Several Soldiers Killed as Boko Haram Attacks Military Base in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked a military base in Ngamdu, located in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several soldiers in the process.

According to reports, the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday when the insurgents, in large numbers, stormed the camp situated along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway.

Motorists and commercial drivers reported that the military temporarily blocked the Ngamdu road until around 11:20 a.m. following the assault.

“I left Damaturu very early hoping to reach Maiduguri around 9 a.m., but when I got to Ngamdu, the road was closed,” one traveller told reporters anonymously. “Some security personnel asked us to be patient, saying there was a problem ahead. Later, we learned that Boko Haram had attacked the soldiers.”

According to Daily Trust, sources in the area said the terrorists caught the troops off guard.

“The attack lasted for hours before the insurgents retreated, but they managed to kill and injure several soldiers,” a resident said.

However, a security source played down reports of heavy casualties, insisting that the troops fought back effectively.

“The terrorists attempted an ambush, but our gallant soldiers repelled them after a good fight,” he said. “Yes, some soldiers were wounded and taken to the hospital, but many insurgents were also killed.”

The Nigerian military has not yet issued an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report.
