WhatsApp to Allow Users Access Without Phone Numbers
WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a major privacy update that will let users — including Nigerians — access the app without using their phone numbers.
Instead, users will be able to create unique usernames, similar to what is obtainable on Instagram, Telegram, or X (formerly Twitter). The move marks one of the biggest privacy shifts in the app’s history.
The feature, which was spotted in WhatsApp’s beta testing programme, will allow people to chat or join groups using usernames rather than phone numbers. The goal is to give users more privacy and control — especially in large groups or business conversations where sharing phone numbers may feel uncomfortable.
Leaked screenshots show a new “Username” field in user profiles, allowing users to create handles and hide their numbers if they wish.
According to WhatsApp, usernames cannot start with “www.” They must contain at least one letter and may include only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.
Experts at GSMA say the update could greatly enhance user privacy, as many people hesitate to share their numbers with new contacts. However, the change could also introduce risks such as username squatting or impersonation. WhatsApp is reportedly developing verification tools to prevent such abuse.
The feature is still in testing, but if successful, it could transform how over two billion users connect on the platform — making WhatsApp less about numbers and more about names.
