Stakeholders Chart Course for a Thriving Care Economy in Nigeria

Stakeholders from the care, social, and private sectors recently met in Lagos to explore ways to strengthen Nigeria’s care economy. The roundtable, organized by The Nanny Academy in partnership with Adaba Initiatives and Sisters in Development, marked the International Day of Care & Support 2025 under the theme “Building a Thriving Care Economy in Nigeria: Ethics, Equity, and Investment.”

Fabia Ogunmekan, Principal Consultant at Adaba Initiatives, emphasized that “moral responsibility and human dignity form the foundation of a thriving care economy.” She noted that care work must be recognized and integrated into national development priorities.

According to Amara Agbim, CEO of The Nanny Academy, the care sector holds vast potential for job creation, gender equity, and social transformation. She called for structures that professionalize care work and ensure fair pay, training, and protection for workers.

A highlight of the event was “Voice from the Field”, where caregiver representative Jessica Ifechukwu shared her experiences, describing care work as “service, love, and sacrifice.” She urged for better recognition, respect, and support for caregivers.

Participants discussed strategies for policy reform, private-sector investment, and community-driven initiatives to ensure care work remains dignified and sustainable. They also committed to advancing policies that protect care workers’ rights, encourage workforce development, and position the care economy as a key driver of inclusive growth and gender equality in Nigeria.
