FG Launches Digital ID App to Give Nigerians Full Control Over Their Data

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday unveiled NINAuth, a new digital identity and consent management platform designed to give Nigerians control over who accesses their personal data across key sectors including banking, telecoms, education, and government services.

The platform, developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), was launched at the State House in Abuja during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, including the Ministers of Interior and Finance, as well as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, described NINAuth as “a platform that restores data autonomy to Nigerians.”

“It allows user consent management, meaning citizens can now decide what information to share and who they want to share it with—whether for banking, SIM registration, education, or health insurance,” she explained.

Coker-Odusote noted that users can revoke access to their data at any time, promoting transparency and digital privacy. “If law enforcement stops you, for example, you can simply open the app and display your digital ID immediately,” she added.

The new app integrates various identification credentials — such as driver’s licence, student loan ID, health insurance card, and bank verification number — into a single digital identity wallet.

According to the NIMC DG, NINAuth connects vital national databases including tax, immigration, banking, and education records through the National Identification Number (NIN), Nigeria’s core digital ID system. The integration, she said, will strengthen accountability, eliminate “ghost beneficiaries” from government programmes, and improve service delivery.

The app also features real-time data access alerts, allowing users to monitor when and how their personal information is viewed. Live demonstrations during the launch showed how NINAuth simplifies services like passport renewal, tax registration, student loan processing, and business onboarding through instant verification and QR code scans.

Coker-Odusote emphasized that NINAuth marks a major step in building a transparent, citizen-focused digital ecosystem that gives Nigerians full control over their identity data.
