ADC rejects Trump’s military invasion threat, accuses Tinubu of prioritising politics over insecurity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria over alleged genocide, warning that such intervention would destabilize the country.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, the ADC accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing in its primary duty to protect lives, noting that “nearly 15,000 Nigerians have been killed since 2023.”

The party said Trump’s remarks highlight global concern for human rights but stressed that Nigeria’s crisis is not about religion. “This is not a Christian or Muslim problem—it is a national tragedy that affects all Nigerians,” Abdullahi stated.

While appreciating international concern, the ADC cautioned world powers against any form of armed intervention, saying it would harm Nigeria’s democracy and unity. Instead, the party urged a total overhaul of the nation’s security architecture, new ambassadorial appointments, and a foreign policy reset focused on national interest.

“Time is running out,” the statement warned. “Nigeria is not beyond saving, but decisive action is needed to protect every citizen.”

Trump had on October 31 threatened to send troops to Nigeria “to kill the terrorists killing Christians,” prompting President Tinubu to reaffirm that Nigeria remains a democracy committed to religious freedom and ongoing efforts to address insecurity nationwide.
