Wike faults opposition over US ‘country of particular concern’ label

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has accused opposition politicians of using the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking on Politics Today on Monday, Wike dismissed claims that the government is enabling the persecution or killing of Christians, calling such allegations “false and politically motivated.”

“Christians hold key positions in this administration—the former Chief of Defence Staff and the Secretary to the Government are Christians. How can anyone say this government supports the killing of Christians? That’s politics taken too far,” he said.

Wike suggested that the controversy was part of a broader plot to weaken Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. “The opposition knows it cannot defeat the President, so it’s trying to divide the country through religion,” he added.

The minister also criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of possible military action against Nigeria, saying, “An invasion of Nigeria is not in anyone’s interest. Look at Somalia, Libya, Iraq—foreign intervention only brings chaos.”

He emphasised that terrorism affects all Nigerians, regardless of faith, and urged unity in confronting insecurity.

Trump had recently declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing alleged Christian persecution and threatening to cut U.S. aid if the killings continued.
