Zohran Mamdani, 34, has made history as the first Muslim elected Mayor of New York City. Once a little-known figure, Mamdani won on a progressive platform promising higher taxes on the wealthy, expanded social programs, and stronger support for working families.

“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he declared in his victory speech, pledging an inclusive government that rejects “fear and division.”

Mamdani’s win came despite threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump to cut federal funds if he defeated independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Backed by youth activists and grassroots organizers, his victory marks a major shift toward progressive politics in the city.

He vowed to focus on affordable housing, healthcare, transit, and climate resilience, promising “a model for equity and opportunity.”

Democrats also celebrated wider victories nationwide, including gubernatorial wins in Virginia and New Jersey. In California, voters passed a measure redrawing congressional districts to favor Democrats, further reshaping the political map ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Though not on the ballot, Trump’s influence loomed large, underscoring America’s deepening political divide.Headline news
