President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is pursuing an ambitious road development programme aimed at improving transportation, boosting economic activities and strengthening connections between different parts of Nigeria.

The initiative centres on four major highway projects: the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Calabar-Ebonyi-Abuja corridor, and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Road. Together, the projects are intended to improve the movement of people and goods, connect agricultural and commercial centres, and open up communities to new economic opportunities.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to improve access to coastal communities, industrial centres, ports and tourism destinations. Meanwhile, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway could strengthen trade between northern and southern Nigeria, particularly by making it easier for farmers to transport their produce to major markets.
The Calabar-Ebonyi-Abuja corridor is designed to improve connectivity between the South-East, South-South and North-Central regions, while the Akwanga-Maiduguri route is expected to support commercial activities and improve access to communities across parts of the North-Central and North-East.

Beyond these flagship projects, the Federal Government is also undertaking road rehabilitation, bridge repairs and other infrastructure improvements across the country. These interventions are intended to address transportation challenges, reduce travel difficulties and support businesses that depend on reliable road networks.
Improved highways could also contribute to national security by providing better access for emergency responders and security agencies. However, effective security operations, proper planning and maintenance will remain necessary to achieve these benefits.
The success of the programme will depend on timely completion, transparent project financing, environmental protection and regular maintenance. Experts have also stressed the importance of connecting major highways to rural roads, storage facilities and other infrastructure so that farmers, small businesses and local communities can benefit.
Ultimately, the impact of the administration’s road development strategy will be measured by its ability to reduce transportation costs, improve road safety, create lasting economic opportunities and make movement across Nigeria more efficient.
