The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has blamed brake failure for the accident that killed three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) on Saturday.

The crash, which occurred at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, involved a sand-laden tipper truck, a Toyota Corolla, an MPV bus, and four tricycles. LASTMA spokesperson Taofiq Adebayo said the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to ram into several vehicles and resulting in a multi-vehicle collision.
Three LASUST students — two males and one female — died on the spot, while seven others, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the police evacuated the victims and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as avoidable, citing overspeeding, reckless driving, and poor vehicle maintenance as major causes of road crashes in Lagos.

Efforts to reach LASUST spokesperson Lanre Kuye for comments were unsuccessful.
