Defence Minister addresses Wike’s clash with soldiers, says ‘we’ll defend every officer on lawful duty’

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has assured that the Federal Government will protect all military personnel carrying out their lawful duties.

Speaking at a press conference on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja, Badaru said no soldier would be victimised for performing legitimate tasks.

His remarks followed Tuesday’s confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Navy Lieutenant A.M. Yerima at a disputed land site in Abuja reportedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo.

Badaru stated, “We will always defend our officers on lawful duty. The matter is being investigated, and any officer acting legitimately will be fully protected.”

Videos of the altercation, which surfaced online, showed Wike clashing with military personnel and demanding proof of the land’s ownership. The incident has stirred debate nationwide, with Nigerians calling for transparency on the disputed property.Headline news
