Tinubu Urges Media to Balance Criticism with Patriotism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on media practitioners to uphold their role as the Fourth Estate in nation-building and the promotion of democracy.

Speaking at the 21st Nigerian Guild of Editors Annual Conference (ANEC) 2025 in Abuja, themed “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: Role of Editors”, Tinubu praised editors for their dedication to sustaining democracy and encouraged them to shape public discourse constructively to strengthen national unity.

He highlighted the critical role of journalism in Nigeria’s history, from challenging colonial injustices to maintaining hope during military rule. Tinubu stressed that in the age of rapid information flow and social media, the editorial function is more important than ever, requiring verification, balance, and professional judgment.

“Report boldly, but truthfully. Critique government policy with knowledge and fairness. Aim not to tear down, but to build a better society,” he urged.

Acknowledging national challenges, including terrorism and banditry, Tinubu assured that his administration is committed to restoring peace and prosperity. He called on the private sector, civil society, and the media to collaborate in fostering a climate of reason and unity.

In response to requests from the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Tinubu promised his administration would consider fiscal incentives, legal protections, and policy support to enhance media operations and safeguard press freedom.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised Tinubu for attending the conference in person, marking a historic first for a sitting president. He noted that under Tinubu’s leadership, the media operates freely, with over a thousand broadcasting stations active nationwide.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, speaking on the conference theme, stressed that editors play a pivotal role in shaping national narratives, particularly during elections. He urged the media to promote electoral integrity and restore public trust ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Eze Anaba, President of the NGE, commended Tinubu’s presence and appealed for continued government support for the media through tax relief, VAT exemptions, financing, and the establishment of a Media Development Fund to foster innovation and newsroom transformation.

Anaba emphasized that editors must uphold truth, fairness, and transparency while acting as constructive partners in national progress.Headline news
