Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has reportedly passed away in London, United Kingdom.
According to our Sources, Obiano died after battling severe heart failure and complications arising from urinary cancer.
A family member confirmed the development, saying: “His health had been deteriorating for months, but the final collapse happened suddenly. We are devastated.”

Medical sources in London also revealed that the former governor had been in intensive care before his condition worsened.
“He fought till the very last moment,” a hospital insider said.
Earlier this year, the Federal High Court in Abuja had scheduled November 25 for the continuation of Obiano’s trial over alleged money laundering involving over N4 billion, a case which was later reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar.

Obiano, who governed Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022, faced a nine-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a previous hearing on October 7, 2024, EFCC lead counsel Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) presented witnesses, including former bank staff Mr. Ugochukwu Otubelu, who testified about managing the state’s security vote account under Obiano’s administration.

Otubelu testified that the account was operated by former Principal Secretary Willy Nwokoye and Accountant Theophilus Nweze, with whom he handled transactions frequently.
