PDP elects Kabiru Turaki as new national chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as its new National Chairman at the party’s convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Turaki, who ran unopposed after Katsina politician Lado Danmarke withdrew from the race, secured 1,516 votes. Despite pulling out, Danmarke still received 275 votes.

Solarin Sunday Adekunle was elected Deputy National Organising Secretary with 633 votes, while 17 other positions were filled unopposed. The roles of Youth Leader and Deputy National Legal Adviser were stepped down.

Turaki’s emergence follows the PDP’s zoning arrangement, which ceded the 2027 presidential ticket to the South and the chairmanship to the North. Northern stakeholders later endorsed Turaki as their consensus candidate.

Top party leaders—including Governors Bala Mohammed, Dauda Lawal, and Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum—attended the convention, alongside Bukola Saraki, Jerry Gana, Abba Moro, and Ibrahim Shekarau.

Turaki’s election is expected to influence PDP’s restructuring ahead of the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, governors Ahmadu Fintiri and Caleb Mutfwang have disowned the convention’s decision to expel FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Ayo Fayose, and others.Headline news
