The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed the attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, where students and teachers were kidnapped.
In a statement, the Diocese Secretary, Fr. Jatau Joseph, said the attack occurred between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., causing panic within the school community. One security guard sustained a gunshot wound during the incident.

The Diocese condemned the attack and expressed deep concern for the victims, stating that security agencies were immediately alerted and rescue efforts have begun. It added that church authorities are working closely with security operatives, community leaders, and the government to secure the release of the abducted students and staff.

The Diocese also urged the public to remain calm, support ongoing security operations, and continue praying for the safe return of all victims.
Niger State Government Reacts
The Niger State Government also confirmed the abduction.
According to Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, authorities had earlier issued security advisories following intelligence reports of heightened threats in the northern senatorial district. The government directed all boarding schools in the area to close temporarily.

However, St. Mary’s School reportedly reopened without notifying or obtaining clearance from the government.
The state government says search-and-rescue operations are underway, and security agencies are fully engaged in efforts to locate and recover the abducted pupils and staff.

The government urged school owners and community leaders to strictly follow security advisories to protect vulnerable communities, stressing that the safety of children remains a top priority.
Recent days have seen a surge in attacks across parts of Nigeria, raising concerns about worsening insecurity and the continued targeting of schools.
