The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦100 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of training facilities belonging to the police and other security agencies across the country. The release of the funds, however, will depend on the final approval of President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was made during NEC’s 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, following recommendations from the ad hoc committee set up to evaluate the state of security training institutions nationwide.
In addition to the rehabilitation budget, NEC also endorsed ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services related to the project.
President Tinubu had earlier, during NEC’s 152nd meeting in October, proposed a comprehensive overhaul of training centres used by Nigeria’s security agencies.

Presenting his committee’s findings, the chairman of the ad hoc committee and Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, highlighted the urgent need for intervention, noting that many of the training facilities are in extremely poor condition.
After the presentation, NEC Chairman and Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the administration’s readiness to revamp the institutions and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
Shettima also urged all state governors to ensure that their economic reforms produce measurable improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians. According to him, governance must shift away from making promises and instead prioritize real, visible outcomes.

“Our responsibility is not to dwell on challenges but to resolve them. Not to hope for progress, but to drive it,” the Vice President emphasized.
He added that policies must translate into meaningful changes that can be felt in communities, markets, schools, clinics and farms across the nation.

NEC, chaired by the Vice President, includes all 36 state governors, along with the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Economic Planning, and other key government officials.
How do you think restoring these security training institutions will affect Nigeria’s overall security system?
