New Naval Base Proposed in Ibeno to Strengthen Maritime Security in Akwa Ibom
A new naval base is set to be established in the Ibeno axis of Akwa Ibom State, aimed at enhancing the protection of the state’s maritime infrastructure.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Eno by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, at the Governor’s office.

Admiral Abbas, recently appointed by the President, said the visit was part of an operational tour of the Eastern Naval Command, designed to gain first-hand knowledge of all naval units in the state. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for his support to the Nigerian Navy since he assumed office.
“Akwa Ibom is strategically important as it hosts many critical national assets. We are committed to collaborating with the state to safeguard these assets. Security is everyone’s responsibility, and we need continued support from the state. I was briefed on the proposed naval base in Ibeno, and having an outpost or a full base there would be highly appreciated,” Admiral Abbas said.

Responding, Governor Eno congratulated the Chief of the Naval Staff on his appointment, thanking the President for making the choice at a time when maritime security required heightened attention. He assured full support for the project, saying he is ready to issue a certificate of occupancy for the proposed Ibeno base.
The Governor also highlighted previous collaborations with the Navy, including:
-
The construction of a passenger ferry for the Marine Jetty in Oron
-
Donation of gunboats to enhance maritime security

Governor Eno emphasized his administration’s commitment to security, noting the establishment of the Ministry of Internal Security, led by Gen. Koko Essien (rtd). He praised the collaborative efforts of all security agencies in maintaining peace across the state.

“Our government is inclusive, with women, youths, and retired military officers playing key roles in governance. We remain committed to expanding the frontiers of peace in Akwa Ibom,” Governor Eno added.
