ELECTRICITY BLACKOUT: FCCPC SEALS IKEJA ELECTRIC OVER PROLONGED BLACKOUT IN 19 HOMES

FCCPC Seals Ikeja Electric Headquarters Over Longstanding Power Dispute

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed Ikeja Electric’s corporate headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, after the company allegedly left 19 residential units without electricity for nearly 30 months.

The commission stated on Thursday that this occurred despite the complainant, owner of the 19 units, paying all required charges and fulfilling all obligations. Enforcement was carried out in the presence of security personnel, with staff asked to vacate as officials locked up the premises, a Channels Television video showed.

Ikeja Electric confirmed the development, assuring that it is engaging with the FCCPC to ensure the closure does not affect other customers.

Bola Adeyinka, FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, said the action followed repeated failed attempts to secure the company’s compliance with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.

“Sealing the facility is a proportionate enforcement measure after several opportunities for voluntary compliance. The seal will remain until Ikeja Electric fully meets directives issued by NERC and the FCCPC and provides written proof of compliance,” Adeyinka said.

The commission explained that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had previously ordered Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 non-Maximum Demand accounts, recognizing 19 residential units and a service point as separate customers with proper metering.

“Ikeja Electric did not implement this decision, leaving the complainant without electricity for over two and a half years despite fulfilling all payment obligations. The lack of power has prevented these units from being put to use,” the FCCPC said.

The commission added that multiple compliance directives issued in April and October 2025 went unheeded, prompting enforcement action.

Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, described the issue as a compliance matter and confirmed the company was responding to the FCCPC. He assured that power distribution to the majority of customers remains unaffected.

Okotie lamented the approach taken by the commission, suggesting the matter could have been resolved privately but reaffirmed the company’s commitment to uninterrupted electricity supply.

Recent months have seen growing complaints from Lagos residents over Ikeja Electric’s service. In March, residents of Harmony Estate protested prolonged blackouts and rising tariffs, demanding compensation and a public apology, noting that promised daily electricity supply of 20 hours had not been met despite tariff increases from N68 to N225 per kWh in September 2024.
