NIGERIAN POLICE INSIST ON TINTED GLASS PERMIT POLICY, DENY VIOLATING COURT ORDERS.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has insisted that the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy remains valid, saying it has not violated any court order in relation to its enforcement.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police said it was responding to public debates and criticism, particularly from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), over its plan to resume enforcement of the policy from January 2, 2026.

The NBA had condemned the announcement, describing it as a breach of the rule of law, noting that court cases challenging the policy are still ongoing. The association argued that the policy has led to harassment, extortion, and rights abuses, and questioned the police’s authority to impose permit fees.

The Police, however, said the earlier suspension of enforcement was a voluntary decision, not the result of a court order, and was intended to give motorists time to regularise their permits.

While reaffirming respect for the judiciary, the NPF stated that there is no final court ruling declaring the policy illegal or permanently restraining its enforcement. It added that pending litigation does not automatically halt its statutory duties.

The Force also cited security concerns, linking the misuse of tinted vehicles to crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery, and assured that any enforcement would be carried out professionally, with zero tolerance for extortion or abuse.
