NDDC PAYS COMPENSATION TO FAST-TRACK KEY RIVERS ROAD PROJECT

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced that construction work on the 3.75-kilometre Okrika–Borikiri Road project, which includes three bridges linking Okrika and Port Harcourt in Rivers State, will soon be intensified following progress in compensation payments to affected property owners.

During an inspection visit to the site, an NDDC official in charge of utilities and infrastructural development confirmed that compensation issues in the Borikiri area have been resolved, allowing for the planned evacuation of residents and the removal of structures along the right of way.

According to the commission, demolition activities will commence shortly in the affected areas as work on the project is expanded. Officials noted that construction had already been progressing steadily in other sections, despite challenges related to waterways and marine operations.

The project, designed to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Okrika and Port Harcourt, consists of three major bridges spanning different waterways, forming a key transport corridor for the region.

Engineers involved in the project explained that adjustments were made after earlier setbacks, including damage caused by a vessel collision, which required a redesign of part of the structure to ensure stability and continuity of work.

The project consultant highlighted that marine logistics have contributed significantly to the cost and complexity of construction, but cooperation among stakeholders has helped maintain steady progress.

Representatives of the construction firm handling the project confirmed that beam installation is expected to begin soon, particularly once demolition at the Borikiri end is completed.

Community leaders in Okrika expressed appreciation for the project, noting that it will reduce travel time, ease pressure on existing roads, and potentially stimulate economic growth across connected communities.
