Tinubu Pledges to Defeat Banditry, Boost Niger Delta Development

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration is committed to defeating banditry and terrorism, emphasizing that security forces are “working tirelessly” to restore peace and stability across the country.

Speaking on Wednesday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a visit from leaders of the Ogbia community of Bayelsa State, Tinubu vowed to sustain efforts against violent groups while also advancing development initiatives in the Niger Delta.

His remarks come amid continued attacks on communities in the North-West, North-East, and North-Central regions, where insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings remain persistent challenges. The Federal Government has repeatedly highlighted gains in security operations, including arrests and the disruption of criminal networks.

Tinubu acknowledged the scale of the nation’s security challenges but stressed that the government would not relent.

“We cannot dwell on past neglect, but we must learn from it. Parts of Nigeria are battling terrorism and banditry, and the challenges are significant. Even small incidents in these areas gain huge attention, but successes continue to be achieved. We are prosecuting and arresting perpetrators, and neutralising those who persist,” he said.

The President further assured that the armed forces are intensifying efforts to restore stability. “Men and women of our armed forces are fighting very hard to bring peace to the country, and I can guarantee that we will prevail,” he said, adding, “That’s all I can promise at this stage.”

Commitment to Niger Delta Development

Beyond security, Tinubu reassured the Ogbia community that development projects in the Niger Delta would continue, highlighting ongoing infrastructure and social service initiatives. He commended the work of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

“Past administrations did not adequately care for the oil-producing region, but we are determined to pursue progress, determination, and constructive engagement with communities in the Niger Delta,” Tinubu said.

The President cited examples such as solar-powered street lighting, noting that such projects are already improving daily life and economic activity in communities that previously struggled with limited infrastructure.

Tinubu also paid tribute to former President Goodluck Jonathan, an Ogbia indigene, describing him as an exemplary leader and promising to continue honoring his contributions.

On community requests, the President pledged to address ecological challenges, including erosion, and to consider infrastructure proposals such as a critical bridge project that would stimulate economic growth in the region.

He further urged legislative cooperation, stressing the role of the National Assembly in sustaining economic recovery and ensuring that improvements in macroeconomic indicators benefit ordinary Nigerians.

“When we assumed office, the economy was in a very difficult position. Today, we have emerged from that period, and the economy has turned a corner. The task now is to ensure that ordinary Nigerians feel these improvements,” he said, acknowledging the role of Dr. Ogbuku in advancing development initiatives.

Ogbia Community Pledges Support

Leaders of the Ogbia community expressed their political support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, praising his appointment of Dr. Ogbuku as NDDC Managing Director.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Robert Enogha said, “The Ogbia Kingdom has come to thank Mr. President for the visible changes in the Niger Delta and to reaffirm our support for him. We are behind you and renew our mandate for 2027.”

Enogha also invited Tinubu to participate in a significant socio-cultural event known as the “initiation,” emphasizing that it represents a unified voice for the Ogbia people.
